Work going really well with panelling out the pit and we are now confident that we will be able to open the doors to Big Rock at 10am on 28th August.

Unfortunately due to circumstances beyond our control we have to delay our opening by a few days. These extra few days will allow us to have everything in place and finalised so you can enjoy the centre to it’s full extent right from the first day.
Our plan now is to be open on Sunday the 5th of September in anticipation for the grand opening event on Saturday the 18th, September. More details to follow...

postheadericon More bouldering going up

The Wave is the final section of bouldering we will be building in phase 1. This takes the overall area of the various bouldering walls to an impressive 450+sqm. Add to this 600sqm of roped climbing in and around the pit and a large group area and it's going to be a BIG centre.

postheadericon Big Boulder looking awesome!

The big twisted and curved panels were fitted to the Big Boulder last weekend and finally we can see what an impressive shape we've created. The Big Boulder has potential for all grades of problem as well as some route length link ups - we can't wait to climb on it! Meanwhile structural steels & timbers are going up around the pit and it won't be long before this starts getting panelled.

postheadericon Big Rock's getting bigger!

We're sorry we haven't updated recently, but things have been happening, as you can see. The pit is now finally formed, and will be left for a little while for the concrete to cure and dry. In the meantime, bouldering walls have been put up all along one side of the unit, including all angles from slightly slabby to worryingly overhanging. Next to that the big, freestanding boulder is also taking shape. The preformed modular wall is quickly going up across the other side of the chasm in the group area. Watch this space to see more bouldering and group areas sprouting up either side of the pit soon.

postheadericon Bouldering Wall Construction Starts

Climbers from the Beacon arrived on site at the beginning of the week to start construction of the climbing walls. They'll be here for about two months. The 'north wall' of the bouldering area has been set out, and will shortly be ready to receive the climbing panels that have already been fabricated (in the Beacon's North Wales factory).

In the meantime, the pit is progressing well. The reinforcement arrived during the week, and concrete pouring for the retaining walls and floor will start on Monday.

postheadericon Pit Progress

Progress has been good in the Unit these last few days. The concrete floor has been broken up and the serious digging of the Pit has started. Meanwhile, Pete the Builder is rushing to get as much done as possible before he heads off to Nepal in a couple of weeks. The electrics and plumbing are well underway, as are the changing rooms, the office and the cafe kitchen.

postheadericon Meanwhile in the Beacon workshop...

Just to prove it isn't all about just ripping things apart at this stage here is a photo of a section of new climbing wall currently being put together in the workshop. The 'Wave' is a style of bouldering wall unique to the Beacon and this is the biggest we've built so far. The Wave along with a truly enormous boulder will form the centrepieces of the main bouldering area.

The JCBs turned up yesterday and started breaking through the floor slab ready for excavation of the pit. In the meantime, the builders have knocked holes in the walls for the first floor viewing gallery, and are getting on well with the kitchen and changing rooms.

postheadericon Finally getting started

Welcome to the Big Rock Climbing Centre blog which will keep you updated of progress over the coming months.

The last few weeks have been pretty hectic with solicitors doing their stuff and putting the final touches to the lease. We now have a building and have wasted no time getting the builders in, as well as dropping off a modular climbing wall used at The NEC Outdoor Show which has now found a new home. Look out for some images of the proposed climbing walls which are now well under way in the Beacon workshop.
